Description
Andean catfish (Astroblepus ubidiai) being held in a hand. This fish, also called Prenadilla, is only found in Ecuador, where it inhabits freshwater rivers, springs and karsts. It is currently (as of 2008) listed as a critically endangered species on the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List, meaning that it is extremely likely to become extinct in the near future unless the circumstances threatening it improve. Its total area of occupancy is less than 10 square kilometres, due to habitat loss caused by pollution. Photographed in Pichincha, Ecuador.
