Description
Head of a horsefly (Tabanus sp.), with compound eyes. The eye is formed from numerous lens structures known as ommatidia. Each ommatidium gives a tiny image of part of the horse fly's field of vision, resulting in a detailed mosaic image. Female horse flies feed on the blood of horses, humans and other large mammals. Photographed in Toachi Pilaton valley, Pichincha, Ecuador.
