The scarlet tanager is a medium-sized American songbird known for its deep red plumage contrasting with black wings and tail. Its plumage and song are similar to other members of the cardinal family. Scarlet tanagers are often out of sight, foraging high in trees, sometimes flying out to catch insects in flight and then returning to the same general perch, in a hunting style known as "sallying". Scarlet Tanagers also love fruit, particularly orange halves put out by humans.
